Keeping it Green at GTC

As well as supporting organizations that promote a healthy environment, Guildford Town Centre has many programs in place to ensure we are doing our part. GTC is working hard to make sure we are being “green".

We are proud to have received a BOMA BESt level 3 certification. BOMA BESt® is Canada’s national environmental certification program for existing commercial buildings. As well, and we were awarded LEED Gold certification in February 2015 for the expansion area of our redevelopment. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices.

Some of the initiatives that we have undertaken to achieve these certifications include:
  • Innovative wastewater technologies including low-flow water fixtures installed throughout the building
  • Organics program for Food retailers and customers in the Food Court. We will soon be expanding the organics program to include all the retailers at GTC.
  • During construction, low-emitting and recycled building materials were used where possible and 75% of the waste was diverted from the landfill
  • We have electric vehicle charging stations: 38 level one stations in the parkade and 2 level two stations in the parking lot outside CIBC
  • Our housekeeping team uses eco friendly products

Programs for our Retailers:

We have programs in place for our retailers to recycle everything from plastic containers, plastic wrap, paper and cardboard, cans and bottles, newspaper, light bulbs, wood, electronics, batteries, metal, cooking oil and organics.

We also have bicycle storage and changing rooms for tenants and their staff to encourage alternative modes of transportation.

New in 2016 is the Green Space Leader program. Retailers at GTC is a program designed to give points to Retailers for choosing green actions. Check back soon for a list of offical Green Space Leaders at GTC.

Good deeds for the community by some of our retailers:
  • London Drugs accepts batteries and household fluorescent light bulbs
  • Lenscrafters and Image Optometry accept prescription glasses.

Recycling for our customers:

  • Plastic bag recycling – we have a large bin located on the lower level across from the Interactive Play Park where you can bring your plastic bags.
  • Cans and bottles are collected in the Food Court and we are working towards increasing the number of collection points around the shopping centre.
  • In our Food Court, the staff sort the garbage to make sure that all recyclable items and organics are separated and diverted from the landfill.
